As someone who cannot do whey, I am always interested in alternatives that are not just trendy but that actually hold up scientifically.

One of the things I appreciate about Equip Foods Prime Protein is the simple ingredient approach. It is marketed as grass-fed, dairy-free, whey-free, soy-free, and gluten-free, which is a big deal if you are like me and dairy protein is a no-go.


From a macro standpoint, most flavors land around 20 to 21 grams of protein per scoop and roughly 90 to 110 calories, which is solid for a beef isolate protein powder.


I also appreciate that there are no sugar alcohols. For some people, sugar alcohols can really irritate the digestive system, so that is one more thing this product avoids.

My one nutrition note is the sodium. The cookies and cream flavor has a higher sodium content than the chocolate flavor. That is not outrageous, especially for an animal-based protein powder, but if you are already consuming a lot of sodium throughout the day, it is something worth paying attention to in the context of your total intake.

Now for the part most people actually care about: how does it taste?


I tested both chocolate and cookies-and-cream mixed with oat milk. The good news is that both mixed surprisingly well. The texture came out smooth, creamy, and frothy, with very little dry powder left behind. That alone was a pleasant surprise because many dairy-free or alternative protein powders either stay gritty, turn chalky, or leave you with that weird, earthy aftertaste.


The chocolate flavor was the clear winner for me.

It was smooth, sweet without being overwhelming, and most importantly, it did not have the chalky texture that so many plant-based protein powders have. I have tried a lot of non-whey options because of my food allergies, and this was the first non-collagen, animal-based complete protein powder that genuinely felt enjoyable to drink.


The cookies-and-cream flavor was still good, but I would not rank it above chocolate. It had a creamy, cereal-milk type flavor with a cookies-and-cream finish, but if you are a chocolate person, I think that is the one to start with. The cookies and cream option is also the higher-sodium flavor, which further tips the scale toward chocolate for me.

What I also appreciated was what it lacked. It did not have the gritty texture I often get from beef collagen products. It did not have the “dirt” flavor some plant proteins have.



And it did not have the odd beefy taste that makes some alternative proteins hard to finish.



Is Beef Protein Isolate Better Than Plant Protein for Sensitive Stomachs?


There is no single protein powder that works perfectly for everyone, but individual tolerance matters.


If you do well with whey isolate, you may not need a beef protein powder. But if whey causes problems and you are tired of tolerating chalky plant proteins just to avoid dairy, beef protein isolate may be worth looking into. That is especially true if you want a complete protein source and do not want to rely on collagen as your primary supplement.


For me, that is one of this product's biggest strengths. It fills a gap that many other protein powders miss. It offers a complete protein source for people who cannot or do not want to use whey, without the gritty, chalky compromise often associated with plant-based powders.
